Tigers Down Longwood

Savannah State used a 9-0 run to break open a close game in a 76-67 road win over Longwood before 1,158 fans on January 29. SSU (4- 17) trailed by as many as 10 in the first period and was down 40-34 at the half. Trailing 60-57 in the second half, the Tigers strung together nine unanswered points to go ahead by six with 2:31 remaining. SSU, who shot 57.4 percent from the floor, had four players in double figures. Jovonni Shuler had 22 points while Preston Blackmon and Cedric Smith scored 14 apiece and Jyles Smith added 13 points and eight rebounds.

SSU Runs At Tennessee State

The Savannah State indoor track team ran in the Tennessee State Invitational on January 29. Earning second place finishes were Shawn Sovnenir (men’s triple jump), Eric Plump (men’s 200m), Ruben Isreal-McBee

(men’s 5000m), Amber Hughes (women’s triple jump) and Amara Jones (women’s 200m).

Former Tiger Standout Laid To Rest

Former Savannah State men’s basketball player Tracy Hill was laid to rest on January 29 in his hometown of Athens, Georgia. Well over 1,000 family, friends, classmates, teammates and co-workers gathered at the Classic Center to pay their final respects the 1990 SSU alumnus who earned a degree in criminal justice. Hill, 45, died of a heart attack on January 24. During the 1988-89 season, under then coach Bob Eskew, he led the team in assists (109), free throws made (59) and free throws attempted (87). Employed with the Athens Housing Authority, Hill leaves behind a wife, four children, his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

FVSU 2011 Football Schedule

Fort Valley State recently released their 2011 football schedule. The Wildcats will start the season by playing at Florida A&M on September 3 followed by their home opener

against Delta State on Sept. 10. FVSU has SIAC games with Clark Atlanta (Sept. 17), Benedict (Sept. 24), Tuskegee (Oct. 1) and Kentucky State (Oct. 8) before facing Bethune- Cookman on October 15. Rounding out the schedule is Stillman (Oct. 22), Morehouse (Oct. 29) and Albany State (Nov. 5). The Wildcats will play Stillman for Homecoming and will play Albany State in Columbus in the 22nd Fountain City Classic.

Paine AD and Coach Resigns

Paine College Athletics Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Ronnie O. Spry resigned from both positions after almost 31 years of service at the school on January 24. Spry came to Paine in 1980 from St. Catherine’s Junior College, where he also served as AD and Head Men’s Basketball Coach. While at Paine, Spry won three SIAC titles, was SIAC coach of the year six times, and had an overall career record of 514-403. Associate AD/head women’s volleyball coach Selina B. Kohn will serve as Interim AD and Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Jimmy Link will serve as Interim Head Men’s Basketball Coach.
