SSU Runs At Appalachian State

The Savannah State indoor track team ran in the Appalachian State Open on January 15. The men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams won first place as did Amara Jones (women’s 400m) and Miguel Velasquez (men’s 800m). Eric Plump was second in the men’s 200m and Darrius Baker was third. Chaz Price was third in the men’s 400m and the SSU “B” squad had a third place finish in the men’s 4x400m relay.

Tigers Fall To Marshall

Joshua Montgomery scored a game-high 20 points but it was not enough as Marshall defeated Savannah State 71- 57 before 4,542 fans on January 10. The Thundering Herd led 11-0 and held a commanding 31-8 advantage with under seven minutes left in the opening half. SSU trailed by 22 at the half but rallied back to make it a 62- 53 game with 1:44 left but got no closer. Montgomery added seven rebounds for SSU (2-17). Jovonni Shuler scored 16 points while Preston Blackmon added 12. Jyles Smith had eight rebounds.

SSU Women Win In Overtime

Courtney Long made a layup with one second left to give Savannah State a 52-50 overtime win over Presbyterian on January 12 in Clinton, S.C. The Lady Tigers led by six with 5:31 left in regulation but PC out-scored Savannah State 9-3 to send the game into a extra period. In the extra period, the Lady Tigers led 50-47 but Presbyterian’s Kristen Stevens tied the game with a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left. Ezinne Kalu had 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals for SSU (9-8)_. Long added nine points and six rebounds while Brittany Cade chipped in nine points and seven rebounds. Alisha Nelson contributed eight rebounds, four points and three blocks.

Miles Hires Football Coach

Miles College has hired Reginald Ruffin as the Bears head football coach. Ruffin comes to Miles after serving five years as assistant coach at Tuskegee, where he was the defensive coordinator and linebacker coach. Prior to his position at Tuskegee, Ruffin had served as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Choctaw County High School in Butler, Alabama; Assistant Football Coach and Defensive Lineman Coach at West Georgia in Carrolton, Georgia; Assistant Football Coach at Jackson High School in Jackson, Alabama; and Assistant Football Coach and Defensive Lineman Coach at North Alabama in Florence, Alabama. He also was an assistant at Tuskegee from 2002-03.
