Lady Tigers Defeat UMES
The Savannah State women’s basketball team defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore 71- 50 at Tiger Arena on January 5. The game was knotted at the half 26-26 but SSU (8-8) pulled away with a 20-7 run to start the second period to take a 46-33 lead with 8:55 left. The Lady Tigers shot 53.8 from the field in the second half. Ezinne Kalu led three SSU players in double figures with a game-high 18 points. Courtney Long and Jasmine Kirkland both added 13 points. Darice Fountaine chipped in 10 rebounds, nine points and six assists while Alisha Nelson had nine rebounds and five blocks.
SSU Falls To Kansas St. and Nebraska
Savannah State fell to 2-16 on the season with road losses last week at 17th ranked Kansas State and Nebraska. The Wildcats defeated SSU 92-61 on January 3 before a crowd of 9,831 while the Cornhuskers topped the Savannah State 68-48 on Jan. 5. Against Kansas, SSU trailed by 10 early in the second half but a 23-9 run by the Wildcats doused any hope of a Tiger upset. Preston Blackmon had 19 points for the Tigers while Jovonni Shuler added 15 points and seven rebounds. Against Nebraska, Cedric Smith had a career-high 14 points before the 7,458 fans. SSU led 20-17 with 4:46 left but Nebraska led 23-20 at the break.The ‘Huskers had a 23-6 run to start the second half to put the game out of reach. Blackmon and Shuler each had 10 points and six rebounds for SSU (2- 16).
SSU Announces Baseball Schedule
Savannah State will have 21 home dates on their 2011 baseball schedule. SSU will play their first six opponents at home before hitting the road on March 1 against Charleston Southern. SSU will have a alumni game on February 12 and will open the season against St. Peters on Feb. 19. Other teams scheduled to visit Savannah are Clark Atlanta, Claflin, Norfolk State, Charleston Southern, USC-Beaufort, Coppin State, Mercer, Chicago State, Edward Waters, Florida A&M, North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T. The Tigers will travel to Georgia Tech on May 10. SSU will be looking to post their first winning season since 2007.
Mavromichalis Named All- American
The 2010 Bowtorow.com/BASN All- American team was announced recently and Windsor Forest graduate Michael Mavromichalis was named to the team. Mavromichalis, a junior, was a leader on the Albany State offensive line, helping the Golden Rams lead the SIAC with 4386 yards of total offense. Also named to the team was Mavromichalis’ teammate Mario Fuller of Jesup. Fuller, a senior, was ASU’s fourth leading tackler with 58 stops
