SSU Athletes Receive Degrees

Several Savannah State athletes received their degrees on December 11 at Tiger Arena in the university’s 174th commencement ceremony. Earning degrees were Shawannda McClain (volleyball, softball & tennis), Charles Huggins III (track), Chris Troutman (football), Deleon Hollinger (football), Brandon Miller (football), Tracy Rankins (men’s basketball), Javares Taylor (football), Jovonni Shuler (men’s basketball), Mekela Martin (track), James Bawlson (football) and Brandon Parker (football).

Tigers Lose To Georgia Tech

Savannah State out-scored Georgia Tech 33-25 in the second half but fell short in a 69-59 loss to the Yellow Jackets in Alexander Memorial Coliseum on December 11 before a crowd of 5,436. SSU trailed 44-26 at the break but opened the second half with a 18-7 run to get within seven points. The Tigers (1-10) closed within six late in the game but would get no closer. Jovonni Shuler led all scorers with 26 points while Joshua Montgomery added 13 and 9 rebounds and Preston Blackmon chipped in 10 points and 6 assists. SSU out-rebounded Tech 43 to 34.

SSU Women Fall At Wichita State

Savannah State opened the game with a 7-0 run but Wichita State responded with a 20-4 run and never looked back in a 67-41 win over the Lady Tigers in Koch Arena before a crowd of 9,831 on December 10. SSU trailed 48-35 midway in the second half but the Shocks used a 10- 0 run to provide the knockout blow. Darice Fountaine, a Wichita, Kansas native led SSU (3-5) with a game-high 25 points.

Condolences To Lockett Family

Condolences go out to the family of Savannah State Booster Club president Bobby Lockett on the passing of his mother. Lena Mae Lockett, 87, of Macon died December 10, 2010 in Savannah after a short illness. Funeral services are Wednesday, December 15th at 12:00 p.m. at Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, 1539 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Macon, GA 31204 with Dr. Timothy French, Pastor and Eulogist. Interment Bloomfield Cemetery Macon, Georgia. Bynes-Royall Funeral Home & Bentley and Son’s Funeral Home Macon, GA are in charge of services.

Newton Wins Heisman Trophy

Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton won the prestigious Heisman Trophy on December 11. On Dec. 9, the College Park, GA resident won the Davey O’Brien and Maxwell Awards as well as the Walter Camp Foundation National Player of the Year. The Davey O’Brien Award is given annually to the nation’s top quarterback, while the Maxwell Award is presented each year to the country’s top player. Newton is the son of Cecil and Jackie Newton who both attended Savannah State. Cecil was a standout football player at SSU from 1979-82.
