Tigers Fall To 1-6
The Savannah State men’s basketball team lost their 6th game in a row after falling to Dayton and Cincinnati last week. SSU lost to Dayton 61- 59 on November 22 despite holding the Flyers without a field goal the final 6:37 of the game. The Tigers trailed by one with 9 seconds left but Dayton made 2 free throws to win the game. Preston Blackmon and Jovonni Shuler had 17 each for SSU. Cincinnati defeated the Tigers 54-41 on Nov. 24. Trailing 48-28 with 4:23 remaining, the Tigers put together a 11-2 run to get within 11 but could get no closer. Shuler led SSU with 14 points while Cashmere Wright, a Savannah native, scored 11 points for the Bearcats.

SSU Women Top

North Florida
Ezinne Kalu scored 24 points, had five steals and four assists to lead Savannah State to a 49-42 win over North Florida in Tiger Arena on November 27. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Savannah State as they improved to 2-3. With the contest tied at 37, SSU out-scored North Florida 8-1 to go ahead 45-38 with 5:15 left. UNF got as close as 45- 42 but the visitors would get no closer as Kalu scored the final four points of the contest from the free throw line. Darice Fountaine added 14 points and 9 rebounds for SSU. The Lady Tigers traveled to Charlotte and fell 79- 41 on Nov. 23. The 49ers closed out the first half with a 21-5 run and had a pair of 14- 2 runs in the second period. Fountaine led SSU with 24 points.

Georgia Southern 41

South Carolina State 16
Georgia Southern (8-4) ran for 323 yards and three touchdowns in a first round FCS playoff win over South Carolina State at Paulson Stadium before 10,214 fans. SCSU fell behind 19-0 before The Bulldogs got a 90-yard kickoff return by Len Elmore and a 21-yard field goal by Blake Erickson to make it 19- 10 at the half. GSU outscored the Bulldogs 22-0 in the second half. At times, the Bulldogs (9-3) were their own worst enemy as GSU scored two safeties off mishandled kickoffs and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Albany State 30

Wingate 28
Albany State advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs with a win over Wingate. Stan Jennings led the Rams (11-0) by passing for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Lironnie Davis ran for one score and caught another for ASU but with less than two minutes left, Davis recovered a onside kick and ran it to the Wingate three yard line to seal the victory. ASU led 23-14 at the half but the Bulldogs made it a 23-21 game midway in the 3rd quarter. The Rams went ahead 30-21 in the 4th as Davis scored on a 45 yard run. With 1:59 left Wingate scored to pull within two but their onside kick back-fired and Davis recovered. Albany State will play Delta State in the next round.
