Savannah State 0

Philip Sylvester ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Rattlers to a rout of Savannah State in front of 8,843 fans at Bragg Stadium in Tallahassee. FAMU (3-3) led 10-0 at the break but scored three touchdowns in the second half to keep the Tigers winless (0-7). Sheldon Barnes gave a good effort for SSU as he ran for 109 yards. Antonio Bostick was held to 36 yards passing while Brian Lackey and Simon Heyward both caught three passes for 18 yards. Chris Asbury and Sadrak JeanBaptise each led the SSU defense with eight tackles. The Tigers made it to the FAMU 4 yard line in the second half but Derek Williams missed a 27 yard field goal attempt.

Fort Valley State 26

Tuskegee 0

Fort Valley State held Tuskegee to just 92 yards of offense as the Wildcats improved to 5-2 with a shutout of Tuskegee at Wildcat Stadium in front of 8,769 fans. Tony Reid and Courtney Aaron both ran for 71 yards for FVSU while Eugene Smith passed for 196 yards. Reid had touchdown runs in the first and fourth quarter while Aaron scored on a 1 yard run early in the second quarter and Smith threw a 18 yard touchdown pass to Demario Barber with 1:31 left in the second quarter.

Bethune-Cookman 14

South Carolina State 0

South Carolina State (4-2) made four turnovers deep inside Bethune-Cookman territory as the 23rd ranked Wildcats improved to 6-0 with a win over the 10th ranked Bulldogs at Dawson Stadium before a crowd of 10,077. SCSU drove to the Cookman 33 but fumbled, had a pass intercepted as they drove to the Cookman 28, fumbled at the 2 yard line and had another pass intercepted at the 8 with just under 2 minutes left. Jevaugh Reams caught a 18 yard touchdown pass with just under 5 minutes left before halftime and Androse Rose scored on a 1 yard run with 7:10 left in the third period. Matt Johnson passed for 198 yards for B-CU.

SSU Begins Basketball Practice

Basketball practice is in full swing at Savannah State. The SSU men return six letterman and welcome 10 newcomers to the team including Angelo Davis, a 6-1 guard, who played at Johnson High School. Cedric Baker enters his 8th season as the Lady Tigers head coach. Baker will have 9 new players on the roster including 6-2 Miami (FL) transfer Rikiah Gatlin. Five of the newcomers stand at 6-2 including Beach High grad Charmaine Greene. Briana Little, another Beach grad, is also on the team. The SSU men posted a 11-15 record last year while the women were 9-21.

Semi-Pro Basketball Tryouts

The Harlem Legends and the Savannah Lady Warriors will be holding tryouts at 6:00 pm on October 22-24 at the Jenkins Boys Club located at 6408 Waters Avenue in Savannah. There is a $20 registration fee. Those trying out need to bring work out clothes, a bio and a DVD if you have one.
