Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter announced today that current Maj. Lenny Gunther has been selected as the second assistant chief for the police department.
Effective Aug. 4, Gunther will begin his role as assistant chief of the department’s Field Operations Bureau, heading the department’s efforts and initiatives to continuously reduce crime. Operations Bureau, heading the department’s efforts dedicated to systems improvement and quality assurance.
“Maj. Gunther is 19-year veteran of the Savannah Police Department who knows our community and has the respect of the rank-and-file,” Chief Roy Minter said. “I am excited to be able to fill this position with someone with the experience, integrity and leadership skills that Maj. Gunther brings to the position.”
Gunther joined SPD in 2001 after serving eight years in the Army. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in business organizational security management. He is a graduate of Leadership Savannah, the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s Leadership in Police Organizations Course, and the FBI National Academy. He is a Georgia POST-certified instructor, and has previously worked as an adjunct professor in the Criminal Justice Department at Armstrong Atlantic University. Today Gunther successfully graduated from the Senior Management Institute for Police in Boston.
During his time at SPD, Gunther has served in the Crime Suppression Unit, the Homicide Unit, Training Unit, Internal Affairs, Savannah Area Regional Intelligence Center, Gang and Gun Investigations Unit, Violent Crimes Task Force, End Gun Violence Initiative, and as the captain over the Southside Precinct. He is currently the major in charge of the Criminal Investigations Division.
Gunther will officially be sworn in as assistant chief at a Badge and Promotion Ceremony at 2 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center
