Sponsors of New and Talented Artists, Inc. kicked its off 2013-2014 year with a successful “Fanfare” at Butler Memorial Presbyterian Church on September 23, 2013. Twenty students were awarded scholarships.
During this event, SONATA’S President, Mrs. Lillian Ellis spoke to the audience with some encouraging words for students, parents, teachers and board members. She welcomed and congratulated the 2013-2014 scholarship recipients; Thomas Schandolph, Nathaniel Jackson Lanier, Jordan Brazzle, Nicole Lark, Jacobi Dortch, Morgan Hall, Janielle Hannon, Jessica Hannon, Bless Loadholt, Alexi Thompson, Soraya Brooker, Aisha Duck, Gabrielle Fontaine, A’Nimah Johnson, Monica Small, Nicole Brower, Gayjalyn Gilliam, Nichlas Lark, Jalaine Mincey and Briana Simmons. Mrs. Ellis told them how privileged they were to receive the scholarship and to take full advantage of the opportunities.
Soraya Brooker, Viola, delighted the crowd with a performance, Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, by J.S. Bach.
Ms. Effie Mydell, SONATA Inc. Alumna and Instructor gave words of encouragement to the students. Effie received Scholarships from SONATA for six years. She recounted her experience abroad to England for seven years, Sweden and France to the students. Effie had some great advice for the students. She advised them to work hard, practice a lot, importance of practicing scales and never give up.
SONATA is ecstatic, this year, about the excellent teachers who will nurture and guide our scholars, they are: Mr. Somi Benson-Jaja, Mr. Tyler Moore, Ms. Karen Daniels, Mrs. Jennifer Smith- Wolf, Ms. Rose M. Smith, Ms. Raziyah Crudelle, Ms. Effie Mydell and Kenyatta Tucker. Three of them are SONATA Alumni students each of whom were in the our program for six or seven years. They have done undergraduate and graduated studies in music.
SONATA 2013- 2014 board members are Lillian Ellis (President), Alma Greene, Dandy Taylor, Dorothy Johnson, Emma Conyers, Alma Williams, Marie Hall, Anna Johnson, Barbara Magwood, Jackie Seymore, Juanita Tucker, Anna Watson, Olivia Swamson and Gloria Villarin.
