The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced the cancelation of spring and winter championship events in a press release Wednesday morning.
The decision does not cancel all games for the winter and spring sports, only the SIAC Championship events. The decision was made by the SIAC President’s Council. Savannah State University Interim President Kimberly Ballard-Washington voted against the measure.
Impacted Savannah State sports include men’s and women’s basketball, women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, baseball and softball.
In the same decision, the SIAC allowed member institutions to continue their current spring and winter sports schedules. Fan attendance restrictions will remain in force, team activities, practice and training opportunities against competition will be determined and defined by each institution, the release read.
For Savannah State, posted schedules for the impacted sports will remain unchanged with the exception that games played against SIAC opponents will no longer be counted as conference games.
All Savannah State Athletics programs are eligible to participate in NCAA Division II post-season play and will focus attention on earning at-large bids to regional NCAA Championships.
Per the conference’s decsion, no fans will be allowed at any sporting competition taking place on SIAC campuses this spring.
“While we understand the decision from the conference to cancel championships this spring, we are still disappointed that we will not be able to compete for conference titles,” Savannah State Director of Athletics Opio Mashariki said.
“However, we will continue with our spring schedules as planned. We are confident that our COVID-19 testing, game day and visiting team protocols will allow us to put our teams in the best position to compete safely. As always, our primary concern is the health and safety of the student athletes.”
Given these changes, schedules might be updated in the coming days and weeks. For the most upto date schedules for all of Savannah State Athletics, visit ssuathletics.com.
