SCCPSS’ 21st Century Community Learning Center Encourages Participation in 9th Annual National Lights On! After-school Rally

On Thursday, October 16, 2008, SCCPSS 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) will join more than 7,500 sites and 1 million Americans across the nation in the 9th Annual National Lights On! After-school rally; an effort that celebrates after-school programs and their important roles in the lives of children, families and communities.

SCCPSS has nine afterschool sites located at Bartow, East Broad, Garrison, Haven and Pt. Wentworth Elementary Schools; DeRenne, Hubert and Mercer Middle Schools; and Beach High School. Each site will celebrate and support the rally with an open house. Times are 3:45 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. for elementary sites and 2:45 – 5:00 p.m. for middle school sites and Beach High.

Parents, school board officials, central administration staff, local city officials, media representatives, and local business and community leaders have been invited to help rally support to keep after-school lights on and doors open.

The 21st CCLC program is a partnership between Savannah-Chatham Public Schools, the YMCA of Coastal Georgia and the Savannah Chatham Youth Futures Authority (YFA). The program supports working families by ensuring that children are safe and productive when the school day ends. Programs such as this give students the opportunity to discover hidden talents as they grow academically and socially.
