Savannah State’s Wright Named MEAC Softball Preseason Player Of The Year

For the second year in a row, Savannah State slugger Torrian Wright was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason Player of the Year, the conference announced on Thursday.

Wright garnered both the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year and the 2014 MEAC Player of the Year awards in her sophomore season. In her freshman season, she also earned the MEAC Rookie of the Year accolade. She is the first Savannah State student-athlete to earn all three MEAC awards.

Last season, Wright – who was also named to the 2015 All-MEAC First Team – started in 43 games for SSU and finished with a .346 batting average, a .536 on-base percentage, and a .757 slugging percentage. She had 31 runs, 37 hits, five doubles, 13 home runs and 41 RBI. She led both the Lady Tigers and the MEAC in RBI and home runs.

Nationally, the McDonough, Ga. native was ranked 13th in on base percentage, 27th in home runs per game, and 33rd in slugging percentage. Wright anchored first base for SSU, finishing second on the team in putouts with 193. She had a .972 fielding percentage with 17 assists. After two years, Wright has a .371 career batting average, a .784 slugging percentage, 14 doubles, 29 home runs, and 92 RBI.

Savannah State was picked to finish third in the MEAC southern division behind defending MEAC Champions Florida A&M and rival Bethune-Cookman.

Hampton was picked to win the MEAC northern division. Hampton’s Jailynn Jackson earned Preseason Pitcher of the Year accolades. Jackson started 30 games as a junior, compiling a 2.79 ERA in 203.0 innings and an 18-12 record. Jackson was the 2014 MEAC Pitcher of the Year and led the MEAC with 135 strikeouts. She registered 25 complete games, with five shutouts in 35 appearances.

The preseason poll is voted on by MEAC head coaches and sports information directors. The 2015 MEAC Softball Championship tournament is scheduled for May 7-9, 2015 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex in Ormond Beach, Florida.
