Savannah State women’s volleyball will return to business as usual this September.
The Lady Tigers have put together a full 21- game schedule for this fall following an unprecedented 2020-21 season.
The Lady Tigers will open their 2021 season on Sept. 9 in Tiger Arena against NAIA opponent Brewton Parker. They will play two more NAIA teams—Life University and College of Coastal Georgia— before opening Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action in late September.
Conference games dominate the season schedule. Savannah State is slated to play 17 conference games this year. They will vie for a championship for only the second time since the school joined the conference in 2019.
They will play fellow SIAC East Division Schools (Benedict College, Allen University, Clark Atlanta, Fort Valley State and Albany State) twice as they battle for a top seed in the division heading into the post-season.
Savannah State will play each of the SIAC West Division Schools (Lane College, Kentucky State, Central State, Tuskegee, Spring Hill, Miles, and Lemoyne Owen) once in an SIAC Roundup set for Sept. 24-26 in Cartersville, Georgia at the Lake Point Champions Center.
Savannah State volleyball’s 2020 season was suspended due to the pandemic. In the spring of 2021, they scheduled four games and a scrimmage. The Lady Tigers played two official games, one inter squad scrimmage and an inter-conference scrimmage in the spring. They won both of their games against Benedict College.
In the program’s first season in the SIAC, they earned six regular season conference wins, garnering a championship berth. After falling in game one of the 2019 SIAC Championship, they rebounded with a win to make it to the semifinals. It was the furthest the program as ever ventured in the post-season during its 36- year history.
After serving as the interim head coach for the 2019 season, Roselidah Obunaga was hired in February, 2020 as the 17th head coach in the program’s history. She is currently 10-17 overall.
