In a preseason poll released last week, presented by HBCU Softball, the Savannah State Lady Tigers were ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division II HBCU softball.

The Lady Tigers came in above Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) opponents Kentucky State (No. 7), Fort Valley State (No. 8) and Miles College (No. 9). SSU trailed Claflin (No.1), Tuskegee (No. 2), Winston-Salem State (No. 3), Lincoln (No. 4), and Virginia State (No. 5) in the poll. Fayetteville State ranked No. 10.

Savannah State senior shortstop Shayna Byers and sophomore outfielder Stacie Smith were named to the First Team of the Preseason NCAA Division II HBCU Team, presented by the same blog, while sophomore second baseman Jocelyn Lozano was named to the Second Team.

Savannah State’s 2020 season was cut short by the pandemic just as the team entered conference play. They concluded the season 8-11 overall and 3-1 in SIAC play. Savannah State softball is set to begin their 2021 season in March. A full schedule will be released soon.
