Savannah State Golf Team Competes In Gary Freeman Spring Invite

The Savannah State men’s and women’s golf teams opened the spring portion of the 2014-15 season with the Gary Freeman Spring Invitational, hosted by fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) school Bethune-Cookman this weekend.

The Lady Tigers finished in second place in the Division I standings, behind Hampton University. SSU shot a 736 as a team, improving on their 375 from round one to a 361 on day two.

Newcomer Rachelle Orme led the Lady Tigers with a two-round score of 168 (88 and 80). Sydney Woolfolk followed Orme with a 182 (92 and 90). Team captain Jocelyn Williams finished the tournament with a 188, followed by Margaret Wilson (198) and Cheyenne Willard (207).

Hampton won the Division I women’s bracket with a team score of 706 (367 and 339). Cheryl Chua won individual medalist honors with a 166 (90 and 76).

The Tigers finished seventh in the men’s Division I bracket with a three-round, team score of 966 (336, 309 and 321). Senior Travis Roe led SSU, finishing in seventh place in the individual standings.

Roe shot a 78 to open the tournament, and then followed it with a 71 in the second round. Roe finished the final day with a 78 for a total score of 227.

Brandon Neals improved on his first round 83, shooting a 79 in the second round. Neals finished with an 80 for a three-round total of 242.

Trevor Podner finished behind Neals with a 250 (91, 79 and 80), followed by Devon Jakes with a 259 (92, 80 and 87). Playing as an individual Kevin Metzger shot a 251.

Florida Atlantic won the men’s Division I bracket with a team score of 296. Marcus Plunkett of Army won individual medalist honors with a threeround score of 220.

The Tigers continue the 2015 season with a trip to Louisiana for the Wallace Jones Invitational, hosted by the University of Louisiana at Monroe. The Lady Tigers are set to host a tri-match with Wooster and East Strasburg on March 9 at Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah.
