Savannah State Announces Esteemed Commencement Speakers

Ceremonies to be held Dec. 13 and 14

Savannah State University (SSU) will hold its 195th undergraduate commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 14, in Tiger Arena. The processional will begin at 8:30 a.m. Approximately 350 students will receive bachelor’s and associate degrees.

The graduate commencement and hooding ceremony will be held Friday, Dec. 13, 5 p.m., in Tiger Arena. Approximately 50 students will receive hoods and master’s degrees.

The Army ROTC will commission its newest officers Friday, Dec. 13, 11 a.m., in the Student Union ballrooms. The Naval ROTC will hold its commissioning ceremony Friday, Dec. 13, 2:30 p.m., in the Student Union ballrooms.

Pearl K. Dowe, Ph.D., will give the undergraduate commencement address. Dowe is a professor of political science and African American studies, with a joint appointment between the university’s Oxford College and Emory College of Arts and Sciences. She will serve as the Asa Griggs Candler Professor in 2020.

A Savannah native, Dowe graduated from SSU in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She went on to earn a master’s degree in political science from Georgia Southern University and a doctorate in political science from Howard University. Dowe’s most recent research focuses on African-American women’s political ambition and public leadership. She is co-editor of the National Review of Black Politics and is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Economics, Race, and Policy and the Race, Gender & Class Journal.

Sarah- Elizabeth Langford Reed, J.D., will give the address during the graduate hooding commencement ceremony. Reed is the former first lady of Atlanta and an attorney specializing in affordable housing. She was an NCAA Academic-All American gymnast at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in French. She went on to receive her juris doctorate from Howard University School of Law. She currently serves on the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.
