Savannah Native Wins Two Prestigious Medical Educational Awards

Bonzo K. Reddick, M.D., a Savannah native and physician with South East Area Health Education Center in Wilmington, N.C., has been awarded two prestigious awards for his work as a physician and faculty member with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

Reddick recently received the Clinical Preceptor Excellence in Teaching Award for off-campus faculty and the 30th Annual Citron Award.

The Clinical Preceptor Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes outstanding teaching by a faculty member educating UNCChapel Hill School of Medicine medical students through one of the nine North Carolina Area Health Education Centers. Recipients of the award are selected by the Academy of Educators Committee made up of AOE members who review nominations from colleagues, department chairs and medical students. Named for David S. Citron, M.D., the Annual Citron Award is bestowed upon a physician who embodies Citron’s excellence as a family physician and educator. The founding father of Family Medicine in North Carolina, Citron left a lasting impression on his students, colleagues and patients.

Reddick is a family physician practicing at Coastal Family Medicine in Wilmington, N.C., where he is a member of the teaching faculty at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Residency in Family Medicine. Reddick serves as the director of pre-doctoral education, where he coordinates and facilitates medical student rotations in Family Medicine. His professional interests include broad-spectrum family medicine, medical student and resident education, health disparities, global health and preventive medicine.

A 1994 graduate of Windsor Forest High School in Savannah, Reddick earned his Bachelor of Science in biology from Morehouse College and his Doctor of Medicine from Morehouse School of Medicine. He will receive his Master of Public Health from UNC-Chapel Hill in August 2012.

Reddick is the son of Chatham County Magistrate Court Judge and Attorney Bonzo C. Reddick and retired Savannah-Chatham County Public School System teacher Betty Reddick. He and his wife, Dr. Keisha Bursey Reddick, have two children.
