The largest fundraiser of the year for the American Diabetes Association, Kissa Pig, presented by Piggly Wiggly, kicked off on Saturday, March 3 at 4:00 p.m. on River Street in Savannah. This year’s candidates made their grand entrances and were introduced to the public. The Kick-off was free and open to the public and took place during First Saturday on River Street.
A contest between community leaders to raise money, Kiss-a-Pig is a regional campaign with competitors from throughout Southeast Georgia and Coastal South Carolina. At the end of the three month campaign, the team that raises the most money kisses a live pig, honored by ADA as the original source of insulin.
The campaign chairman is Tammy Moseley Ray, The Detail Department. Ms. Ray is a longtime American Diabetes Association leader.
Major sponsors for Kiss-a-pig are Live Oak Restaurant Group and their family of restaurants such as Molly McGuire’s, Tubby’s Riverstreet, Tubby’s Thunderbolt, River House Seafood, Fiddler’s Seafood, Fiddlers Crab House, and Spanky’s.The other major sponsor is The Creative Approach.

The 2012 theme, “SOWvivor:, Outwit, Outplay, Outlast Diabetes” is a spoof of the
“Survivor” television show, and celebrates people living with diabetes as survivors of a serious and common disease. The theme sends the message that you can live well with diabetes if you properly manage the disease.
Each competitive team or “Tribe” has a “Coastal Symbol” that their supporters can rally behind.
