Savannah Firefighters Deliver Toys

Savannah firefighters again are helping to brighten the Christmas season for children served by Savannah’s Greenbriar Children’s Center.

Firefighters assigned to Engine 5-B delivered toys to the center Monday morning, December 23rd. The toys had been donated to the department by the local Wingmen Motorcycle Club and ABATE organizations. It was the 26th year that the Wingmen and ABATE (American Bikers Active Toward Education) collected the toys for distribution in the community. Savannah Fire Captains Christopher Shelnutt and Pat Howard, along with Advanced Firefighters Steven Emberton and Shane Petty, were instrumental in collecting the toys again this year.

Savannah Fire Chief Charles G. Middleton expressed his appreciation for the firefighters’ efforts in collecting the toys and praised Greenbriar’s staff for the critical work they do for the community.

Greenbriar was founded in 1944 and the center opened, initially as an orphanage in 1949. Its mission is to promote the healthy development of children and the strengthening of families. The center provides services that include an emergency shelter, homeless/runaway assistance, residential care, independent living, early childhood education & care and Project Safe Place.

Greenbriar’s Assistant Director, Laurita Taylor, says the firefighters’ generous donation will enable Greenbriar to help children in the community to enjoy Christmas when they might not have had that opportunity in the past. She thanked Savannah Fire & Emergency Services for the gifts and the firefighters for their generos- ity and service to the Savannah community.
