Savannah Community Celebrates the Life of Mrs. Adell Black

 
 

Mrs. Adell Oliver Black was born May 16, 1928 in Sylvania, Georgia and transitioned on June 12, 2019. She was the beloved wife of the late Benjamin Black, Sr., loving mother of Benjamin Black Jr. and Carmelita McCaden; devoted grandmother to Kenyatta McCaden.

She was an alumni of Alfred Ely Beach High School and Savannah State College.

Mrs. Black was very active in the Civil Rights movement in Savannah, including working with Crusades for Voters under Hosea Williams to help people register to vote. She even taught illiterate voters how to sign their names in order to register to vote. She marched with an array of civil rights leaders and helped find housing for marchers, as well as getting her employer, Bethlehem Community Center to open their doors to provide shelter for marchers.

Mrs. Black was very active in her church, St. Thomas AME Church. She served as acting Sunday School Superintendent and Mother of the Church. She was also very involved in various children programs in the church around holidays.

In addition to her immediate family, Mrs. Black leaves to mourn a host of extended family, community leaders , and close friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday from 12pm to 6pm at Sylvania Funeral Home, 102 Owens Industrial, Savannah, GA 31405.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Jonesville Baptist Church, 5201 Montgomery St. Sylvania Funeral Home is in charge of the services.
