Savannah Branch NAACP To Hold 100th Anniversary Celebration

 
 
The Savannah Branch NAACP will hold its 100th Anniversary Celebration at the Savannah International Trade Center on Saturday, October 28, 2017 beginning at 6 p.m.

The Awards Ceremony is an integral aspect of the Branch celebration where persons and institutions from the community are honored for their contributions to the mission and principle objectives of the NAACP.

The Esther F. Garrison Education & Volunteerism Award will be received by Dr. Annette Brock, who dedicated her life to education. She taught in the public school system, was interim President at Savannah State University, and has improved our community by volunteering her time and talents to many causes.

The Gilbert, Law, Cooper Leadership Award will be given to Mrs. Mercedes Wright Arnold, a veteran civil rights activist who was prominent in the early 1960’s struggle in Savannah. She went on to become, among other things, Field Director at Large for the NAACP Southeast Region.

The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to Mr. Don Waters, lawyer, CPA, retired CEO of a local business, and board member of the Chatham County Hospital Authority.

He has volunteered on countless boards to bridge the gaps between communities, and has made a substantial contribution in the area of human and race relations.

The Trail Blazer Award will be received by E. Larry McDuffie, musician, choir director, educator, and morning show host at gospel radio station WSOK. His work and talents have effected to further the mission of the NAACP.

The Legacy Award will be given to First African Baptist Church, Bolton Street Baptist Church, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and St. Philip AME Church for providing access to facilities and resources to the Savannah Branch NAACP during the Civil Rights Movement and beyond.
