Organizers of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series have canceled the Savannah race scheduled for November 7-8 weekend.
Race owners and organizers, the Ironman Group, released the following statement:
“With the health and safety of our community being an utmost priority, and based on the mandate from the State of Georgia in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Marathon & ½ Marathon originally scheduled for November 7-8 cannot take place in 2020 and will return on November 6-7, 2021. All registered participants of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Marathon & ½ Marathon will be receiving an email with further information. We thank our participants for their commitment and look forward to providing them with an exceptional race experience in the future.”
“While we certainly understand the decision not to have the event this year, it is disappointing and another major hit on the already hurting local hospitality community,” said Joseph Marinelli, President of Visit Savannah. “The visitor spending from the tens of thousands of race participants and their families and friends has helped us to extend the tourism season into November, which in turn helps to keep people employed as we get closer to the holiday season. We look forward to welcoming them back in 2021.”
The decision to cancel the marathon is the latest high-profile local event to be rescheduled due to the ongoing public safety concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic. Other events that have seen cancelations for 2020 include the Savannah Craft Brew Fest on Labor Day weekend, and the Savannah Food & Wine Festival also in November.
“We will miss having the event for sure,” said Robert Wells, Director of the Savannah Sports Council. “We hope those runners will redirect their attention and plans to participate in the Publix Savannah Women’s Half Marathon, and 5K or the Enmarket Savannah River Bridge Run instead.” Wells went on to add, the Savannah Sports Council is working diligently to develop COVID-19 mitigation plans to operate upcoming races safely.
