The Ready Set Go Back to School (RTS BTS) is celebrating its 5th year with much excitement and enthusiasm. The Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance (IMA) began a committee to reach out to the community to let the people know that there are churches in the community that have wonderful programs that are open to everyone. In an effort to reach the adults, IMA decided to involve the children by doing a back to school giveaway program. The rest is now history. The program was supposed to be small and simple but Rev. Nelson, Rev. Brenda Solomon Steadman and other organizers began talking to others about the need of our children. Our first few dedicated partners like Senator Lester Jackson, the City of Savannah, Amerigroup, WSAV and Cumulus helped establish a successful event. We received donations from many churches and from the non-profit segment of the community. Then we reached out to the Board of Education to learn what the needs of the children were in Chatham County. IMA learned that 46% of the children attending school in the first 30 days did not have the necessary tools and supplies for school.
When the ministers learned of the numbers, the Back to School project became the number one focus of the ministerial alliance. In year 5, the Ready Set Go Back to School committee has rolled up its sleeves to ask many organizations, corporations and churches for assistance to meet the needs. We need donations to fill 5000 bright green bags from the Live Oak Public Library with necessary items for school.
Each bag will include paper, pencil, glue sticks, composition book, pen, index cards, ruler, erasers, pocket folders, crayons (age appropriate), colored pencils and spiral notebook. > The RSG BTS is asking each person, business, organization to consider donating school supplies by dropping off the items at 622 E. 37th Street between 10 am – 1 pm Monday-Thursday or on any CAT Bus.
IMA feels it is important to develop the whole child and seeks after school programs, leadership programs, recreational programs to participate in the event. Since the RSG BTS starts after August 12, then every program that is still seeking participants has an opportunity to reach parents. Vendor booths are available until August 19.
On Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 9 am – 1 pm at the Savannah Civic Center, we invite the entire community to come and enjoy a few hours with their children to learn more about the youth based and adult programs in our community. Also, available will be a dental screening, blood pressure check, glucose check and more. After the families visit the vendors they will receive school supplies for every child present. This is one of the biggest family events in the fall and we wish to continue to grow and provide more assistance and resources to this community.
The IMA Back to School is organized by volunteers and all funds collected are used to purchase items for the giveaway project. If you have any question or wish to participate please contact Mrs. Scott-Pilcher at (912) 844-5522 or Debra Pace Benjamin at (912) 596-5049.
