Phi Delta Kappa Honors Teachers

 
 

School Administrators and community residents joined Phi Delta Kappa International Chapter 1219 in honoring teachers selected by their peers to represent their schools as Teacher of the Year, in the Savannah-Chatham County School System, at the traditional PDK banquet Friday, November 9, 2018. School Administrators participating were Karyta Byers, Savannah High School; Whitney A. Colley, Mercer Middle School; Alonna P. Curry, Heard Elementary; Dr. Renee Bryant -Evans, Gadsden Elementary; Rachel Hurst, West Chatham Middle School; Latila G. King-Slay, Gadsden Elementary, Dr. Christian J. Pantin, Mercer Middle, and Aysha S. Parks, Bloomingdale Elementary. The guests were honored with the performances of Mina Smith, Violinist, and Janielle Hannon, pianist. Both talented and accomplished student musicians from BRAVO performing “La fille aux Cheveus de lin” by Debussy, “Rondo on a Theme” by Beethoven, and ”Excerpts from Meditation from Thais” by Massenet. The very inspiring speaker was Ms. Bynikini Frazier, 2015 SCCPSS District Teacher of the Year and teacher at Hesse K-8. Kappans Brenda Logan and Judy Newsome gave words of inspirations and honor. Teachers receiving Awards of Recognition were Inez Bennett, East Broad Elementary; Carly Coghill, Heard Elementary; Schona Dortch, West Chatham Middle; Ruby Hall, Jenkins High; Africa Hicks, Gadsden Elementary; Lucinda Dunbar, Mercer Middle; Lashonda Garvin, Bloomingdale Elementary and Chaquasha Tomlin, Savannah High School. Whitney, a Teacher of the Year finalist from Esther F. Garrison School for the Arts K-8 was also recognized and congratulated for her achievement in the district competition. Christina Gallagher also attended, in support and collegial appreciation, from Heard Elementary.

PDK is an independent professional association for men and women in education founded in 1906. The organization has chapters across the United States, Canada, and 12 other countries. Chapter 1219 was formed in 1973. The chapter was assisted in making the event possible by a generous donation from Volvo of Savanah. More about PDK may be found at pdkintl.org.
