Phelps Scores Olympic Gold, Now Has 21 Gold Medals

Michael Phelps is a 27- year-old force of nature, who early in his career was nicknamed the “Flying Fish.” Phelps has another title to add to his name, “the most decorated Olympian of all time.” He achieved this feat after winning his 19th medal at the London Summer Olympics.

Phelps surpassed the record achieved by Soviet Union’s gymnast Larisa Latynina. Latynina held the record of having won the most number of Olympic medals (18 medals) during her career for a significant period of time.

Phelps, now at the end of his Olympic reign, has 21 gold medals. Phelps’ only serious opponent was Ryan Lochte, who he beat in a rematch in the 200-meter race. Phelps finished first in the 100-meter butterfly event against Chad le Clos of South Africa and Evgeny Korotyshkin of Russia.

Phelps is set to retire.
