The Ogeecheeton Dawes communities celebrated their annual reunion on Saturday, May 10, 2014. Located in the western part of the city, this area was laid out as a community in 1910. This reunion is traditionally held on Mother’s Day weekend with an aim to bring past and present residents together for food, fun, and fellowship. Over the years attendance has increased as past residents learn of this yearly gathering.
This year’s reunion provided many activities for the children. Older kids enjoyed basketball while the smaller children focused on the bounce house. Cotton candy and snow balls were enjoyed by everyone. The grownups found enjoyment in reminiscing with each other, eating and just plain fellowship.
Great tasting food is always the highlight of the reunion. Most of the food was catered by Barnes Restaurant and the red rice by the Gray Lady. Plenty of barbecue ribs, fried chicken, string beans, baked beans, corn on the cob, macaroni and cheese, hot dogs, hamburgers, sausages, and all kinds of desserts were all finger licking good.
This year’s reunion included some wonderful vendors who showcased jewelry to great tasting coffee. Special thanks goes out to Chassidy Lucas, Michael & Brown Funeral Home, City of Savannah Leisure Services, Mt. Zion Methodist
Church, Michael Chaney, John Law, Doris Brown, Ann Stokes, Sylvia Perry, Sally Anderson, and Kevin and Angel Smith of Atlanta, Ga who stepped up to the plate and helped to make this a successful reunion. Special thanks to Belk, Macy’s, and Sam’s Club for the door prize donations. Last but not least is the President of the Neighborhood Association, Richard Law, Sr. and his wife Johnnie Mae Law whose dedication and hard work pulled this reunion together.
