Myers Middle School Brings Home National Winners

Myers Middle School was honored with two national winners at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America National Leadership Conference held in Orlando, Florida, July, 8- 12 at the Rosen Shingles Creek Hotel and Conference Center. Devonte Hankerson received a gold medal for his project, Chapter Showcase Display and D’Andre Johnson received a silver medal for his project Chapter Showcase Manuel. Both projects highlighted the clubs many achievements during the school year 2011-2012. Their projects were based on strenuous guidelines in the FCCLA Star Events Competition Category. Myers FCCLA was also a recipient of the State “Chapter of the Year award” during their State Meeting held in Athens, GA in March.

Also, attending the meeting were Mrs. Barbara Baker, Mrs. Barbara Conyers, Mrs. Wonita Smith, Mr. Gabriel Woods, Mrs. Sharon Hankerson-Green, Mrs. Sandra Johnson and Myers FCCLA College Alumni, Barry Baker, Jr., Banecia Baker and Takevia Sawyer. Mrs. Barbara Baker, adviser, received the Master Adviser Award, presented by Mr. Michael Benjamin, Executive Director, FCCLA, Inc.

This year’s studentoriginated theme for the annual national meeting was “#realitycheck.” Throughout the five-day convention, participants examined and discussed several critical issues, including family, school and community violence prevention, physical as well as financial fitness, future career exploration and countless community service projects.

Meeting highlights included: over 3,600 students competed in STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) which are competitive events that build proficiency and achievement in leadership and job-related skills, A donation of $37,488.71 was presented to Share Our Strength from National FCCLA to fight childhood hunger. In addition, over 15,000 pairs of shoes were collected to benefit Soles4Souls, and “Spotlight on Projects,” where representatives from states share successful national, state, or chapter projects.
