Former Detroit Lions running back Mel Farr was announced dead Monday afternoon at the age of 70. He was the No. 7 overall pick in the 1967 draft by the Lions and made two Pro Bowls and named the NFL offensive rookie of the year in 1967.
After his football career he owned the Mel Farr Automotive Group in the Detroit area that focused on leasing cars to people with poor credit. In a 1999 Associated Press report it stated that Farr’s automotive business was the largest African American owned business in the United States.
Farr is the second Lions great to die in the past month.
