McAuley and Walsh Awards Presented at St. Vincent’s Academy

On April 21, 2012 alumnae and friends of St. Vincent’s Academy gathered to celebrate the life of Catherine McAuley, the founder of the religious Sisters of Mercy.

As a part of honoring Catherine McAuley, school chose an alumna who exemplifies Catherine’s exceptional attributes.

This year’s recipient of the McAuley Award was Carolyn Redmond Groover of the class of 1954. Mrs. Groover volunteers her time with Inner Faith, St. Peter’s Parish, Meals on Wheels and with St. Vincent’s Academy. Also given the same evening was the Walsh Award to G. Herbert (Herbie) Griffin who volunteered as the basketball coach of the school for 26 years and still does not miss a game! The Walsh Award is named for Sr. Jude Walsh, R.S.M. Sister Jude was principal of St. Vincent’s for 25 years. Coach Griffin is the first man to receive this special award.
