Mayweather Could Lose WBO 147-Pound Title

It was announced Friday July 3rd, 2015 that the 38 year old mega star Floyd Mayweather will be stripped of his WBO weltherweight title, which he won after the long awaited fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao on May 2nd, 2015. Dan Rafael of ESPN.com was the first to announce that the World Boxing Organization officially decided to take back the 147-pound belt from the undefeated champ. Mayweather is having the belt stripped because he has declined to pay the $200,000 sanctioning fee for the title by the deadline. He also deciding against vacating the WBA and WBC junior middleweight titles, which is necessary since boxers are not permitted to hold world championships in multiple weight classes. Mayweather had previously expressed that he desired to vacate the titles he won stating, “I don’t know if it will be Monday or maybe a couple weeks. I’ll talk to my team and see what we need to do. Other fighters need a chance. Give other fighters a chance. I’m not greedy. I’m a world champion in two different weight classes. It’s time to let other fighters fight for the belt.”

Mayweather may have a change of heart since just last week the WBO originally announced the fight between Timothy Bradley and Jessie Vargas was for the WBO weltherweight title. Mayweather’s lawyer released a statement stating that the match left a bad taste in Mayweather’s mouth since he has not yet relinquished the ring that he won in that title.

Despite his feelings, he will have no choice but to relinquish the belt since he has not followed the WBO’s regulations, but this shouldn’t mean much to the champ since he has won so many titles in his career.
