Savannah Singer Matthew Jones, a participant in The Voice Workshop, frequently performs throughout the Savannah area. He most recently appeared as Sportin’ Life in Porgy and Bess with Chamber Music Charleston in the 2010 Piccolo Spoleto Festival. He sang the tenor solo in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and in the role of Guiseppe in Verdi’s La traviata with the Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus.
Grammy-Award Winning Metropolitan Opera star Sherrill Milnes and Opera Star Diana Soviero will present Mr. Jones and 19 of the country’s professional opera singers in “Beautiful Voices” concerts and public master classes March 10th to March 16th in Savannah and Statesboro.
The VOICE Workshop is an event sponsored by Georgia Southern University’s School of Music and The V.O.I.C.Experience (VE) Foundation. This is an extraordinary opportunity for the general public to witness how aspiring opera singers hone their craft during master classes taught by Milnes, Soviero and other professionals. Mr. Jones is a Choral Scholar at St. John’s Church in Savannah, and is a vocal coach for AWOL, Inc. He holds a B. A. in Music from Armstrong Atlantic State University and studies with Dr. Kyle Hancock at Georgia Southern University. To support, Mr. Jones contact Maria Zouves at email@example.com.
Milnes and his wife, Maria Zouves, founded VE in 2001 as a means for classical singers to advance in their careers by bringing together the highest level of educators and developing singers. At the urging of Rebecca Flaherty, a voice professor at Georgia Southern University, the university has partnered with VE.
The first project to emerge from this union is The VOICE Workshop. Twenty professional singers from across the country, including five from Georgia, were selected to participate in a week of private lessons, operatic coaching, rehearsals, public master classes and performances in both Statesboro and Savannah.
Milnes will present public master classes at 7:30 p.m. March 10th at the Carol A. Carter Recital Hall at Georgia Southern University, followed by Soviero’s class at 7:30 p.m. in the Foy Music Building on March 13th. In Savannah, Milnes will present a public master class at 2 p.m. March 11th in the sanctuary at Christ Church, 28 Bull Street.
The performers will be presented at “Beautiful Voices,” a concert of opera, song and more in Savannah at 7:30 p.m. March 15, 2012 in the sanctuary of Christ Church, 28 Bull St., and in Statesboro at 7:30 p.m. March 16, 2012 at the Foy Music Building at Georgia Southern University.
We’d love for local performers and choir members to Lend Your Voices during the “Beautiful Voices” Concerts. A mandatory "Beautiful Voices" rehearsal will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday March 11, 2012. Get the musical score in advance by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org
The public is invited to attend the master classes as Milnes and Soviero share insights garnered from years on the international opera stages.
