On Wednesday, November 4, 2009 three Mass Communications Explorer Post students took the initiative on a day off from school to get up early and participate in a live broadcast with Morning Show Host, Bill Edwards on WTKS-AM, a ClearChannel Radio station.
The purpose of this live appearance was to promote the Explorer Post Program and encourage area business leaders to consider starting new Explorer Posts in the future. Jeremy Joshua, Chelsey Williams and Darnisha Green, all students at H.V. Jenkins High School, joined the Explorer Post program because they are interested in career in Broadcasting, Journalism and Multimedia.
Following the show, Bill Edwards gave the students a tour of the radio station, including a look at the original equipment dating back to when the station first went on the air.
He also explained the difference between AM and FM frequencies and discussed various career opportunities within the field of broadcasting.
Said Chelsea Williams of the tour, “I actually hated the things I had to learn in physics class, even though class itself was fun. I always questioned when I would ever use any of ‘this stuff’ in real life, because I was not aiming to be an engineer or anything in that field. However once we took the trip to ClearChannel & and Bill Edwards was explaining the technical terms behind radio, I wished I would have paid more attention in that physics class.”
Exploring, a Learning for Life program and a subsidiary of Boy Scouts of America, strives to be America’s premier career and character education program for youth.
