Kirkland W. Ward was born in Miami, FL, July 30, 1925. He was reared in Savannah, GA where he attended the local public schools and was a member of the 1944 class of Alfred E. Beach High School.
Mr. Ward passed away Thursday, March 18, in Orlando, FL where he had moved after retiring from Nynex Corporation in New York after twenty-seven years in various management positions.
Kirkland was among the first local men to volunteer for the Marine Corp during World War II, where he served for three years and received an honorable discharge.
He settled in New York, and received a B.S. degree from New York Institute of Technology.
In Orlando, he was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and of Shepherd’s Hope, SCORE, President of the Orlando Hosts, Vice President of the General Daniel “Chappie” James, Jr. ‘Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen and a member of several other organizations.
Mr. Ward is survived by his wife Lila. During their marriage of thirty years they traveled tHe world. His other survivors include his mother, Mrs. Jimmie Willie Devoe (101 years young) of Valdosta, GA; daughter Kathleen; sons, Kirkland, Jr. and Gregory; grand-children Jason, Chalon, Chakote and Kirkland, III; great grand- children, Hlari and Mishani as well as other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service was held, Friday, March 26th at 3:00 PM at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Orlando, FL.
