On Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 10:30 a.m., Sol C. Johnson High School will receive a Golden Football next week from former Oakland Raiders player George Atkinson. Atkinson played in Super Bowl XI for the Raiders, but played his high school football for Johnson High from 1959-1963. Atkinson is still employed by the Raiders, but will be in Savannah on Thursday, February 11th to make the presentation.
The school is receiving this honor as part of the 50th Super Bowl Anniversary celebration for the NFL. The NFL launched the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll initiative to recognize schools and communities that contributed to Super Bowl history and positively impacted the game of football. Schools chosen receive a commemorative Wilson Golden Football for every player or head coach who graduated from their school and was on an active Super Bowl roster.
In addition, The NFL Foundation will provide the schools with a new character education curriculum and the opportunity to apply for grants of up to $5,000 to help support and grow their football programs. The NFL Foundation has invested $1 million towards the campaign.
