How many of you remember the Azalea Bowl Classic (1951-1965)? Just in case you have forgotten, it was the annual showdown between the Beach High Bulldogs and the Woodville High Wolverines. Always played on Thanksgiving, this was a classic event in the city of Savannah.
Until 1959, the two high schools for Blacks were Beach and Woodville. The teams were coached by Joe Green (Beach) and Joe Turner (Woodville) “JOE” and “JOE”. In Savannah, Thanksgiving night each year was one of the most celebrated nights for students, alumni and friends of these two schools.
Recently, a group of alumni from both schools met and thought that it would be great to celebrate and recall those wonderful competitive moments that also included the bands and cheerleaders.
On Saturday, December 30, 2017 at the Progressive Recreation Center on Ogeechee Road, beginning at 1:00 pm, ‘The Beach Alumni and Friends’ and the ‘Woodville Tompkins Alumni and Friends’ will gather to remember and have a fun day of celebrating and reflecting with plenty of good food, music, dancing and door prizes. We are asking a donation of $25.00 for tickets. The proceeds will be used to benefit and enhance the athletic programs of each of these two institutions.
Just remembering and being reminded of those glorious years should serve as a great motivation to be a part of this event. Let’s make it fun-filled and successful.
