The Hungry Club Forum of Savannah, Inc. (HCFS) will host its monthly, Signature Roundtable and Open Forum, on Saturday June 4, 2011, in the Multipurpose Room of the Main Building of the West Broad Street YMCA, located at 1110 May Street, at 9:30 AM.

Dr. Charles J. Elmore, noted author, historian, and Professor Emeritus at Savannah State University will be the featured speaker on Special Field Order No. 15, commonly remembered for its provision of “Forty Acres and AMule” to certain newly freed slaves following emancipation.

The open floor discussion will delve into the first official attempt of the United States to make reparations for the forced slave labor imposed on the Negro race for nearly a century and a half.

The historic meeting on January 12, 1865 with U. S. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and General William T. Sherman with twenty (20) leaders from Savannah’s African-American churches, led to the issuance of Special Field Orders No. l5, establishing the legal and historic basis for the Promise of “40 Acres and a Mule” pronouncement.

All Hungry Club Forum activities are open to the public. For more information, please call Julia Wright at 233-0855 or Diana Harvey Johnson at 927- 8425.
