The St. Philip AME Churchfamily welcomed area college and university students, faculty and staff to our 8th Annual College Day Celebration on Sunday, August 25, 2019. The 10:00 a.m. Worship Service was enhanced through music presented by St. Philip’s Foundation Choir, GSU/ Armstrong Campus Gospel Choir, The SSU Wesleyan Gospel Choir and “Unspeakable Joy”, Mime Ministry of St. Philip.”. Interim Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Melanie Miller – Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong campus and Interim President, Mrs. Kimberly Ballard-Washington- Savannah State University – shared words of encouragement to the students and spoke to an appreciation for the church’s commitment to the spiritual, emotional and physical wellbeing of the students. The Proclaimed Word “When God Speaks” delivered by St Philip’s Pastor Jai S. Haithco, Sr. challenged the students and congregation to hear, listen and be obedient to the voice within. He also reminded us that staying in touch with God through prayer is essential, because “prayer still works.” The morning worship was made complete with a baptism of a future scholar which was a tribute to our former pastor The Reverend Scottie Swinney (deceased). Immediately following the morning worship the students were able to fellowship and partake of a ‘home cooked” meal. During this time the students were presented a St. Philip AME Church tote bag filled with school supplies and toiletry items. The added highlight of the day was the awarding of 10 $250 Book Scholarships sponsored by the congregation of St. Philip, along with the members of the church who are affiliated with Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., Sororities; Alpha Phi Alpha Inc., Omega Psi Phi Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Inc., Fraternities. Individual scholarships were sponsored by Pastor Jai and First Lady Brenda Y. Haithco, Bro. Bruce Adams of Adams Funeral Services, Dr. Brenda Logan, and 6 Plus 2. A surprise $100 scholarship was given by SSU Alumnus, Former St Philip Minister of Music and First District Alderman, Van. R. Johnson, II. An open invitation to attend Bible Study and Worship Services at St. Philip was extended offering a church away from home. We thank God for allowing us to celebrate this occasion with area college students and pray He continues to bless them on their academic journey.
