Savannah State freshman Torrian Wright was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball Rookie of the Week for the week of March 11-17, while SSU senior Madison Hedderly garnered Pitcher of the Week honors for the same week.
Hedderly was named the MEAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year prior to the beginning of the 2013 campaign. This is her first weekly honor of the season. Hedderly led the Lady Tigers with a 2-1 mark in a four-game series with Maryland Eastern Shore in Savannah.
The Dublin, Ohio native pitched 14.0 innings in three games, striking out 13 of 59 batters, recording a 2.49 ERA. In a historic 20-1 win over the Lady Hawks, Hedderly pitched 5.0 innings, allowing only one earned run on one hit. Hedderly is currently 13-6 after 123.0 innings pitched. She has a season ERA of 3.64 and is second in the MEAC in strikeouts with 112. Over the four game series, Wright hit .636 in 11 appearances at the plate. She totaled two home runs, two doubles, six runs scored, and 10 RBI in the series. Playing at first base, she added 16 putouts. This is Wright’s third Rookie of the Week accolade this season. The McDonough, Georgia native is batting .405 overall after 79 plate appearances. She has seven doubles, and leads the team with 32 RBI. Wright and Hedderly currently lead the MEAC in home runs. Wright has hit nine, while Hedderly has six. The Lady Tigers are ranked 31st in the nation in batting average and seventh in doubles per game. Along with the two Lady Tigers, Maryland Eastern Shore sophomore Morgan King was named Player of the Week. The 16-12 Lady Tigers open MEAC play this weekend on the road. SSU travels to Tallahassee, Florida for a threegame series with Florida A&M. First pitch of a doubleheader on Friday is set for 1 p.m.
