November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and there are currently 25.8 million people in the United Sates who have been diagnosed as diabetic, and a startling 1.9 million new cases of diabetes diagnosed annually in persons 20 years of age and older. What a shame, when we know that this as a preventable and reversible disease.

In it’s August 1, 2011 report, “Diabetes is Common, Disabling, and Deadly”, the CDC states that a person with diabetes has a shorter life expectancy, and about twice the risk of dying on any given day as a person of similar age without diabetes.

Today, In this column, I want to bring awareness to some of the additional problems diabetes can bring such as stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, amputation and blindness.

Checking your blood sugar, taking the drugs and seeing your doctor regularly will not safe guard you from these poor outcomes. You know that, right? The only way to circumvent these eventualities is a change of diet, lifestyle and to exercise.

Is your life worth saving? The hardest answer for me to hear is – No!. Some have been in denial, saying ‘oh, I don’t receive this curse’, others say that changing a lifetime of habits is too hard. Some have said that they can’t afford it – the change, diet, exercise, better food, est., and others have chosen to use there resources to beautify the body – outside, rather than inside.

All of these answers are forms of the same answer, No!. No, my life is not worth saving! And it saddens me so much, and has been the hardest answer for me to hear, and a difficult lesson, too, that some can-not be saved. No faith, no desire, no vision for a better life.

But, for those of you who do want to take back your life, and enjoy a wonderful quality of life, there is prevention, which is easy, and reversal of diabetes, early or late, for those who value their lives and who have a desire to win.

It is a change from what you’ve been eating and doing, to a new way of doing things to save your life. Because you certainly can’t keep doing the things that made you sick, and expect to get well, right?

New education and new lifestyle measures will turn poor health around and wellness is on the horizon, no matter how long diabetes has had you.
