Here are the questions I get a lot about organic vegetables and fruit. “Are organic vegetables better”?. “I can’t buy all organic because of the price”. “Does it really matter, if I buy organic or not?”

Does it matter?, Yes, it matters. And, it matters more if you are sick, and trying to get well. If you are juicing vegetables and fruit every day in an effort to get more nutrients and better quality nutrients to regain your health and save your life? Buy organic!

If you are in reasonably good health, and just want to know which are most important to purchase organic, and which are ok to purchase conventionally grown, in an effort to save money. Here is what I think. You can shop smart by purchasing the fruits and veggies you eat a lot, from the organic section. Then the ones you only eat occasionally, can go onto your conventional list.

Does it really matter? I think it does. Especially for children, babies, expectant mothers, breastfeeding moms, and persons trying to get well.

A study done at the University of Washington in Seattle, found that preschoolers who ate conventionally grown fruits and veggies had six times the level of certain pesticides in their urine as those who ate organic foods. Also a 2003 report from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention detected twice the level of some pesticides in the urine of children as in that of adults.

Knowing that the reproductive organs and the brain is still developing from infancy through age 12, and with young livers and immune systems less able to get rid of contaminants and pollutants, eating organic is certainly more important for our children, and pregnant and lactating moms.

We also know that many herbicides, pesticides and other harmful substances used in the growing of our produce, can cause health crisis. Exposure to these products has been linked to cancer, immune system suppression, nervous system disorders, reproductive damage, and hormone disruption.

By eating, drinking and using more organic products more often will improve our lives in many ways, and benefit the planet as well. Keeping us healthier, with better quality air, water, and food, which equals better quality of life, overall. And, also will improving the quality and selection of organic foods, and lower the cost as well.

Foods with a thick peel, or skin or shell that is removed, before cooking or eating are good candidates for buying conventionally grown. Such as the produce we eat whole such as celery, peaches, grapes, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, apples, nectarines, bell peppers, kale, spinach, and potatoes..

Fruit and vegetables such as: corn, avocados, eggplant, onions, mangos, pineapples, grapefruit, cantaloupe, watermelon, sweet peas, kiwifruit, and cabbage, all have skin, rind, husks or leaves to be removed before eating, and are therefore less likely to contain high levels of pesticides. Eating foods without pesticides, pollutants and other chemicals with offer better health, both for the peace of mind and the superior nutrients and you will be so much more thoughtful of what you put into your body and how you treat it. Life is good, and remember, that health is a choice. Carolyn Guilford is a former Critical Care Nurse, certified in Cardiology and Hematology.
