In our class – Grocery Shopping 101 – one of the lessons we teach, as we roam the grocery isles is, ‘What to look for in the foods we purchase or what to look out for.’ I believe we cannot have a healthy diet if we bring home foods that are harmful to us. For many, many years additives have been used to enhance the appearance, texture, and flavor of foods. But, more importantly, to increase the shelf life of foods. The question is are they safe?
Read thru this list, and the answer is an alarming NO. Food additives help food manufactures in processing, packaging and the storage of grocery items. Have you ever questioned how food products stay on the shelves so long without spoiling?
The typical homemakers spends probably 90 percent of their food budget on processed, packaged, off the shelf items, and therefore are exposed to thousands of artificial food additives which cause untold health problems. Here are some of the worse. I warn you to arm yourself with a magnifying glass when you shop. Read the ingredients list, and put back products that list any of these items.
Any Artificial Sweeteners-
Aspartame, NutraSweet and Equal, Splenda, all are believed to be carcinogenic and causes many other adverse reactions. Artificial sweeteners produce neurotoxic effects such as dizziness, headaches, mental confusion, migraines, and seizures. Avoid these sweeteners if you suffer from asthma, allergies, hives, or Hay fever. Artificial sweeteners are found in many products that you would not think of as sweet, or needing a sweetener. Are added to most diet or sugar free sodas, desserts, sugar free gum, drink mixes, baking goods, table sweeteners, cereal, breath mints, puddings, drink mixes, ice tea, chewable vitamins, toothpaste, and countless other items. Beware, they have been linked to kidney failure, cancer, liver problems, brain tumors, and many other disorders.
MSG – Accent MSG is an amino acid used as a flavor enhancer in soups, salad dressings, chips, frozen entrees, and many restaurant foods. MSG is known as an excitotoxin, a substance which overexcites cells to the point of damage and death. Studies show that using MSG can cause depression, disorientation, eye damage, fatigue, headaches, and obesity. MSG fools the brain into thinking you are not full, therefore you continue to eat. Found in many Chinese foods, called Chinese Restaurant Syndrome, many snacks, chips, cookies, seasonings, most Campbell Soup products, frozen dinners, and Deli meats.
High Fructose Corn Syrup
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a highly-refined artificial sweetener which has become the number one source of calories in America. It is found in almost all processed foods. HFCS causes weight gain faster than any other ingredient, increases your LDL “bad” cholesterol, and contributes to the rise of diabetes and tissue damage, such as diabetic nerve damage, and other harmful effects. Look for it in most processed foods, breads, candy, flavored yogurts, salad dressings, canned vegetables, cereals, and virtually any packaged product.
Trans fat is used to enhance and extend the shelf life of packaged food products and is among the most dangerous substances that you can consume. Numerous studies show that trans fat increases LDL cholesterol levels while decreasing the “good” cholesterol, and increases the risk of heart attacks, heart disease and strokes. Also contributes to diabetes, diabetic eye disease, increased inflammation, and a host of other health problems. Look for it in margarine, chips and crackers, baked goods, and fast foods.
