Heartburn is very common, in our culture today, with two in ten persons experiencing the symptoms once each week, or more. It is brought on by any number of different causes, including stress, obesity, pregnancy, smoking, or even some of our favorite foods.

Symptoms include a burning sensation in the chest sometimes radiating up to the throat and mouth. Sour or bitter taste, nausea, or chest pain.

Before considering drugs, think how your lifestyle maybe causing your discomfort.

Many times a change in diet, and lifestyle will be more effective, and eliminate the risk of side effects from drugs.

Some lifestyle measures to consider include loosing weight, eating earlier, not smoking, chewing gum, increase water, and a change of diet.

Lose some weight, especially if you are carrying belly fat, because excess weight in the stomach and chest can cause heartburn. Tightening up in this area will help you feel better fast, help you to breathe and sleep better and will relieve sleep apnea, too.

Smoking, we know, reduces saliva in the mouth, impairs throat muscle reflexes, damages the mucus membranes, and increases acid secretion in the stomach. All of which leads to heartburn.

Eat earlier: Acids in the stomach are more likely to back up into the esophagus if you tend to lie down soon after eating, causing heartburn. Set dinner time earlier so that you are not still digesting food at bedtime.

Become conscious of how much you eat. Over eating is a major cause of heartburn, as is eating too fast, not chewing fully, eating in bad company, and eating while stressed. Monitor how you feel as you eat. When you are approaching full, stop and assess. Get more only if you are really hungry. Always evaluate the time, place, company, atmosphere, and food before you are eating.

Water. Drink more water! Being dehydrated, gives the digestive system the ability to function properly. Drinking a hot tea with and after the meal helps to aid the digestive system. Ginger root tea, and other herbal teas are a great choice. Instead of candies after a meal try crystallized ginger to help digestion and combat heartburn.

Spend some quiet time in conversation after the meal, or better yet, enjoy a leisurely walk after dinner to enhance the digestive process.

Sure there are lots of drugs for heartburn via prescription and over the counter, but making an effort to resolve this minor lifestyle issue yourself is far better for your long-term health. Remember, Health is a Choice!
