What makes us happy?, I notice persons who outwardly seem to have it all, but say that something is missing from their lives, and causes them to be unhappy. They stress incessantly over the missing elements, yet don’t know what they are.
As we strive for the things we think will make us happy, the right job because the money from it will make us happy, providing the things that money can buy; the perfect home and the perfect car, the perfect wardrobe, the beautiful body, the most stylish garnishes, and the approval of others, but tired from never having enough. Seeking happiness.
But, what is it that makes us truly happy? My mom used to tell me that happiness is not in things but in us. And in people, relationships. Having purpose and meaning for your life. And in personal freedom, and in setting goals for yourself and accomplishing them. Then leaving something, at the end, that we can share. Something that can, or does or will at some point, benefit the larger community, giving notice that “I was here”.
We create our own lives in the choices we make. But, what is the end goal? Where are our thoughts from day to day? And, what are your actions?
Here are some things to consider if you feel you want more happiness in your life: How do you manage stress, nurture yourself and protect your emotional health? Reading, meditation, journaling and close friendships with whom you can confide your deepest feelings, will add to your sense of connectedness, both to your world and to God in you.
How is your attitude? Optimistic – plans for the future? It is so important to have something to look forward to. This is the day that the Lord has made. I will love and enjoy this day so much, that I look forward to more of them and I’ve got a plan laid our for how I’ll enjoy each one.
Focus – on what you are doing at any one time. Really get into it and put forth your very best effort. This thing that you are working on is you. It is your gift. It is using your time and your energy, never to be recalled. It is using your life. Make it the best of you. How are you caring for your physical health? There is no happiness in illness and pain. Healthful eating, exercise and sunlight adds not only to ones total health, but also adds to our emotional sense of well being, fights depression, and allows us to feel happiness. Exercise at least 30 min each day, eat your greens, and get some sunlight on your skin. Walking with someone is a great way to shake loose toxins from the body and bond with a new or old friend.
Studies show that persons who know Christ and have an active prayer life are healthier; less stressed and count themselves lucky and happy. Some of my favorite prayers are in the Psalms. Make a commitment to read some of prayers each day, and feel how they resonate with what is happening in your life. Prayer changes things, Prayer changes us. Happy and content is our birthright. Practice happiness in your life today. ………Beloved I wish above all things that thou May Prosper, and be in Health…….. 3 John 1:2.
