Communities In Schools of Savannah, the state’s premiere model for dropout prevention and student wrap-around supports, is proud to announce Haven Elementary School 5th grade student LeBron Weaver as Regional Winner of the 2018 Communities In Schools of Georgia Champions Award. LeBron was honored last Monday by Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal and Governor Nathan Deal at a reception held in Atlanta at the Georgia Aquarium. LeBron Weaver submitted an art piece paired with a written and verbal presentation and was the youngest winner selected from entries submitted from several hundred students from over 40 counties/ school districts across the state. This is the second time Haven Elementary has had a student achieve regional and state recognition in this competition.

Also recognized were First Lady Sandra Deal for a lifetime of commitment to children across the state; the Yaarab Shriners, for their partnership with Communities In Schools of Georgia in re-launching the Red Fez Reading Club; and Communities In Schools served students who have overcome barriers and obstacles to achieve and success in school.

The Communities In Schools (CIS) Champions Awards are an annual event that recognizes CIS students, grades K-12, who are sometimes overlooked and often expected to underachieve. The awards boost a student’s confidence andhelps them set new goals and gain a better understanding of the importance of academic achievement and succeeding in school. Hundreds of CIS students from over 40 counties / school districts throughout Georgia participate.

“Communities In Schools believes that all students deserve a chance to succeed and reach their full potential,” said Catalina Garcia-Quick, Executive Director of Communities In Schools of Savannah. “We understand the difference that one caring adult can make in the lives of students who struggle academically. We are so proud of LeBron and pleased to honor all of the student champions who have overcome the obstacles they face everyday to succeed in school and life.”
