Georgia Department of Labor Launches RésuMAY

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler announced that the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) is launching a month-long effort to help job seekers improve their chances for employment. It is called RésuMAY, and will occur throughout the month of May.

RésuMAY will focus on résumé-writing tools and employment-related services available year-round to job seekers in GDOL offices throughout the state. GDOL career centers, Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) offices, and Workforce Investment Boards (WIB) will participate.

“Résumé-writing assistance is one of the most popular and valuable services that Georgia’s workforce system offers,” said Commissioner Butler. “Studies have shown that an employer makes a decision about a job seeker within the first 30 seconds of looking at a résumé. That’s why a wellwritten résumé is critical, otherwise the applicant may not get an opportunity to interview for a job. Through RésuMAY, we’ll be able to better equip job seekers to market their skills to employers.”

GDOL will provide a variety of resources at the state level for RésuMAY. They include Type Explore Discover (Ask TED), a live on-line chat scheduled for May 25 devoted to résumés, a series of new on-line résuméwriting podcasts, and new online resources and marketing materials for job seekers to download.

Local career centers and other area one-stop centers will offer a variety of résumé-writing services. Some activities include résumé workshops, employer led feedback discussions, résumé contests, and oneon one intensive résumé sessions. RésuMAY is targeted to general job seekers, older workers, professionals and long-term unemployed. Plans also are underway to offer these résumé-writing activities at career expos, schools, military installations, churches, and libraries.
