The Savannah State community continues to mourn the recent deaths of former athletes Tracey Russell, Napoleon Grimes and Peter Ladson.
Russell was a native of Darlington, South Carolina and was a member of the 1990 SSU football. He expired on August 3, 2020 in a Florence, SC hospital at age 52.
The former offensive lineman earned a football scholarship to University of District of Columbia and transferred to SSU the following season after the UDC program folded. While at Savannah State, Russell was a part of a team that posted a 7-4 record under Bill Davis .
Funeral services were held for Russell on August 8 in the church yard of Christ Temple Holiness Church.
Grimes was a Savannah native who died on Aug. 4 at age 65.
A graduate of Richard Arnold, Grimes played a year of basketball at Savannah State and was a member of Russell Ellington’s first squad during the 1979 season. After college, he joined the military. A memorial service for Grimes was held on Aug. 14.
Ladson, a former multi-sport standout at Groves High, died on Aug. 11.
After graduating high school in 1975, Ladson attended Savannah State where he played football and baseball. Graveside services were held on Aug. 21 at Whitehall Cemetery in Port Wentworth.
