What started out as a family gathering turned tragic when former Savannah State women’s basketball player Courtney Long drowned over the weekend.
According to reports, Long, who turned 28 on May 16, was with her family at Lake Wedowee’s Flat Rock Park in Alabama. Around 7 p.m. on June 9, her niece, Hanna Tucker, was walking on some rocks near one of the buoys and lost her balance which resulted in her falling into the water. Long jumped into the water to try to save her. Rescue crews scanned the area that night but suspended the search because of darkness. The bodies of Long and her niece, who was six, were found the next morning and the Randolph County coroner pronounced them both deceased around 8:30 a.m. on June 10.
A native of Bowden, Georgia, Long played basketball at SSU from 2008-11. In 112 career games she scored 485 points, 351 rebounds, 213 assists and 198 steals. A 5-foot-9 guard, Long graduated from Savannah State with a sociology and according to her Facebook page was employed by Allstate.
