After a 61-year hiatus, the president and board of trustees at Florida Memorial plan to bring back football to the south Florida campus.
The first Lions team took the field back in 1929 when they competed in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Association.
The last football game played by the Lions earned a 14-8 win over Albany State in 1958. The University, then called Florida Normal and Industrial Institute, competed in the Southeastern Athletic Conference. From 1945-58 the team finished with an all-time record of 41 wins, 25 loses and six ties with a break in the 1949 season.
Currently the Lions compete in the Sun Conference as members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. The Sun Conference does not sponsor football.
FMU officials hope to hire a football coach this fall and start having practice in Spring 2020.
