Does your vision seem cloudy? Do you feel like your glasses are always dirty? Do colors seem dim and glare from car lights bother you?
If so, you may have cataracts. Cataracts are a clouding of the lens inside the eyes. The lens works like a camera allowing light to focus onto the back of the eyes. If there is a cataract present, the light never makes a clear distinct path to focus directly onto the center of your eyes.
Some people think that cataracts are a growth of tissue that can be seen from outside the eyes. Instead, cataracts are located inside the eyes just behind the colored part of the eye called the iris.
Cataracts are mostly thought to appear only in the elderly. However, cataracts can also be present at birth or can occur as a result of an eye injury. Cataracts can also be caused by diabetes or can result from long-term use of steroids.
Surgery is the only treatment for cataracts. They naturally progress with time and eventually end up needing to be removed from the eyes. When your doctor determines that cataract surgery is required, the internal lens is removed and replaced with a lens implant. Cataract surgery is done on one eye at a time. Most people have much better vision after having cataract surgery and thanks to advanced technology with the implants many people often are no longer dependent on glasses after they have surgery.
Have you had an eye exam lately? If so, did your doctor mention that you have cataracts? If you are over 55 and have not been examined in the last year, you need to be checked for cataracts. A comprehensive dilated eye examination can check for this. Close monitoring and annual eye examinations are required to ensure that you get the best of care when you do develop cataracts.
