The Board of Directors and the Staff of the Economic Opportunity Authority for Savannah-Chatham County, Area, Inc. is please to announce the 2015 Annual Meeting and Luncheon to be held on Friday, October 2, 2015 at 12 noon at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront on General McIntosh Blvd. The speaker for this occasion will be Attorney Leah Ward Sears, former Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.

Leah Ward Sears is a Partner at Schiff Hardin LLP. She grew up traveling the globe with her family and father, Colonel Thomas ,(former SCCPSS) who served as Master Army Aviator in the U.S. Army. The family eventually settled in Savannah, Georgia, where she attended elementary and high schools.

Ms. Sears has achieved a distinguished position in Georgia’s history. She was the youngest person and first woman to serve as a Superior Court Judge in Fulton County, Georgia, and when appointed to the Supreme Court by Governor Zell Miller. In retaining her appointed position as a Supreme Court Justice, Ms. Sears also became the first woman to win a contested state-wide election in Georgia.

In July 2005, she became the first woman to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia. Before being elected to the bench, she was a practicing attorney with Alston & Bird and, at the age of 27 years, she served as a judge on the City Court of Atlanta.

Ms. Sears founded and served as the first President of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys and founded the Battered Women’s Project in Columbus, Georgia.

Ms. Sears is a member of the National Association of Women Judges, the Atlanta Chapter of Links, Inc., the United States Supreme Court Historical Society and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
