The Bluffton and Hilton Head Island communities were shaken deeply by the March 5, 2021 killing of Bluffton High School senior Dwon Fields, Jr., known lovingly to so many across the Lowcountry as “DJ.”

Now, two months later, you can help build the beloved Bluffton native’s legacy simply by eating out or spending money at a local business that is taking part in DJ’s Day of Giving on Wednesday, May 5, 2021.

The first annual DJ’s Day of Giving will take place across the Lowcountry, with hopes that all the folks itching to get out of the house and support local business will at the same time help fund scholarships in DJ’s name to stand out students pursuing a career in the trades.

An array of local businesses across Bluffton and Hilton Head Island are giving a portion of their May 5 sales to the Dwon Fields, Jr. Memorial Fund.

Fields was the victim of an apparent mistaken identity murder while driving along the Bluffton Parkway on Friday, March 5, 2021. The assailant shot into the car Fields was driving, causing a car accident that seriously injured two other BLHS students, E.J. Graham and Kylan Simmons. Fields suffered a fatal gunshot wound and died at the scene, according to police.

DJ was born and raised in Bluffton, the only child of parents Kema Bryant and Dwon Fields, Sr. He was known as a gentle giant among his peers, a hulking star of the Bluffton High School football team who wore No. 55 and was rarely seen without a smile on his face.

“He’s the biggest, kindest teddy bear,” said Kilwin’s owner Jake Higgins.

Fields was preparing for a collegiate football career with hopes of studying to build a welding career after college. “We plan to honor his dreams by helping others pursue their trade dreams with DJ’s help,” said his father, Dwon, Sr., is of the purpose behind the fund.

Those who can’t get out on May 5 and still want to support the cause can do so in a number of ways.
